Lactose Free Diet
People who suffer from a Lactose Allergy or Lactose Intolerance have difficulty digesting lactose. Lactose is a milk sugar found in many dairy products and foods containing dairy. People who are Lactose Intolerant lack the enzyme “Lactase” that helps the body digest this milk sugar. People with Lactose allergy or lactose Intolerance are placed on a Lactose Free Diet.
Many people with this condition can tolerate small amounts of Lactose containing foods such as milk, cheese and ice cream. However, larger amounts can cause indigestion and upset stomach. People with Lactose Intolerance should always read the food labels as many foods such as margarine, dressing and baked goods can contain lactose. Many people test themselves by eating small amounts of Lactose containing foods and products to determine their tolerance to them. Some people, may be prescribed Lactase enzyme tablets by their physicians. The addition of the enzyme to their diet permits them to be able to eat more foods containing Lactose.
As a person ages, the Lactose Free Diet becomes more important because of the lack of calcium in the diet that is necessary for bone density and strength. Older people should eat more Calcium containing foods that are lactose free such as greens and fish. Dietary calcium supplements should also be taken to maintain bone strength and prevent Osteoporosis and bone brittleness. Many people on Lactose Free Diets substitute soy milk and soy protein products to provide the nutrition their body needs.
At Dairy Free Market we provide a full line of Lactose Free Foods and Products. We also carry many soy products that can be substituted in a Lactose Free Diet.
